Mahumapelo a force to be reckoned with - political analyst─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:50 Tue, 26 Feb 2019
A political analyst, Ongama Mtimka, says the embattled former North West premier, Supra Mahumapelo, remains a force to be reckoned with in the African National Congress (ANC) political arena.
Mtimka tells OFM News that despite the ANC’s move to establish another structure called the provincial election team, in the hopes that it will quell Mahumapelo from being at the helm of the party again, he still remains a problem for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership.
This as the Acting ANC spokesperson, Dakota Legoete, was quoted by media reports earlier saying the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) and the Provincial Task Team (PTT) no longer have the authority in the province and in the run-up to elections in May 2019. This in the wake of Mahumapelo’s two court battle victories, ruling that he be immediately reinstated as chairperson of the ANC in the province. Mtimka says Mahumapelo is lightly to accept any deal or make things easy for the ANC.
The courts earlier found that the ANC NEC’s decision to disband the North West PEC was unlawful and set it aside. Despite these rulings, the ANC is continuing to block Mahumapelo from returning to the top post. Mtimka says Mahumapelo represents a grouping that was not happy with the outcomes of the 2017 Nasrec ANC elective conference where Ramaphosa defeated Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and, in the aftermath of that, was not happy with the Ramaphosa camp seemingly purging those that did not favour him. “So, to that extent, he is continuing to fight not necessarily out of a noble principle but out of defending the agenda of the camp that feels threatened and wants to regain control of the ANC in as many structures as possible, Mtimka concluded.
