NW premier raises concern over ageing infrastructure─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:31 Thu, 28 Feb 2019
The North West premier, Job Mokgoro, has raised a serious concern around the ageing and broken infrastructure around the province that continues to cripple service delivery.
He says there is a need to prioritise the repairing of the infrastructure that the government invested in. His utterance comes in the wake of rampant protests in the province over a lack of water, electricity and the overflowing of sewage. OFM News previously reported that residents in Itsoseng and other towns in the province have been up in arms protesting for the lack of water since 2016 while residents in towns such as Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom have constantly lambasted the provincial government for sewage running through the streets or sometimes inside their yards.
But municipalities such as Matlosana and JB Marks, that include Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom, have previously been quoted as saying the ageing infrastructure is to blame. The JB Marks Municipality once told OFM News that due to the ageing infrastructure the municipality has been unable to respond swiftly to the demands of residents who were most of the times furious about sewage engulfing their yards. However, Mokgoro says work will commence soon to respond to the ageing infrastructure to avert further dissatisfaction amongst residents in the province.
This Mokgoro-led team made up of Members of the Executive Council and senior public servants to Itsoseng in the Ditsobotla Local Municipality went on a walkabout at some of the local development projects. He says that the issues that have been raised by residents in Itsoseng and around the province are issues that can easily be managed and dealt with. Central to the decision to take the EXCO meeting to Itsoseng was to afford him and EXCO members the opportunity to meet with the local community. Local development projects visited, include the brick-making project and a water reservoir.
