Angry University of the Free State Workers have accused the management of the institution of being untrustworthy and negotiating in bad faith amidst protests over the controversial outsourcing of workers by the institution.

This, as on Thursday, irate workers allegedly rejected the institution’s offer to scrap the outsourcing of workers in 2021 due to the contractual obligation with several other companies. The General Industrial Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA) official, Vuyo Mapompo, tells OFM News that workers have cast serious doubt on the institution's offer, saying it's not enough and they want to be employed by the university immediately. The classes were disrupted after outsourced workers at the UFS embarked on an unprotected strike on Thursday.

However, Mapompo says the management has informed them that they are open for engagement but as things stand, chances are the protest will continue on Friday 1 March 2019.

He says the institution’s management has since decided to be cunning and display bureaucratic tendencies by exploiting their members. Mapompo further said that workers decided to demonstrate in front of the main building in protest against the failure of the UFS management to implement the settlement agreement about the outsourcing, which was reached back in 2016. In 2016, about 100 National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) members sang and danced outside the Bloemfontein campus, demanding a 7% wage increase, as well as for outsourcing to end.
