Protests expected to continue at UFS on Friday

Protests expected to continue at UFS on Friday | News Article

It remains to be seen whether lectures will resume as normal or not on Friday at the University of the Free State (UFS) amidst protests by angry workers who demand to be employed by the university immediately.

This as the Workers and Students’ forum (WFS) on Thursday rejected the offer put on the table by the institution’s management, to start insourcing them in 2021. This follows the disruption of classes by workers and the WFS forum, who on Thursday allegedly forced students out of classes.

The General Industrial Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA) official, Vuyo Mapompo, tells OFM News that the disruption of classes was the only viable option to get the attention of the management. Workers allege that the university has reneged and backtracked on the 2016 settlement agreement to do away with outsourcing.

Mapompo has defended their stunt to disrupt classes, saying it would not have made sense to protest without disrupting the day-to-day operations of the institution. He further says it was necessary to do so because the students from different organizations are in support of the strike.

The university’s spokesperson, Lacea Loader, earlier said in an email to OFM News that the executive management remains committed to engaging continuously with all its constituencies, in an open, transparent, and honest manner.
