Protest action in the North West town of Ganyesa outside Vryburg flared up briefly on Monday morning, as residents set a water truck alight.

Provincial police spokesperson, Aafje Botma, says the unrest occurred at around 05:00 in the morning, with angry residents blocking Tosca Road on the R378.

In addition to the truck, four vehicles were also stoned. Botma says no injuries were reported and no arrests were made. The police spokesperson and a local health facility tell OFM News the situation is now calm and everything is back to normal, following this morning’s events. The reason behind the abrupt and brief unrest is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, protest action is also being reported in the township of Huhudi in Vryburg, which is over 70kms outside Ganyesa. It is believed that residents are up in arms over the lack of water in the area. Botma is yet to comment on the latter incident. The municipalities of Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality, which includes Ganyesa and Naledi Local Municipality, which includes Vryburg, are among eight municipalities in the North West placed under provincial care last year by Premier Job Mokgoro. This is a developing story.
