NW premier calms irate residents after threats of violence─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:39 Fri, 08 Mar 2019
The North West premier has called for irate residents of Montshiwa in Mahikeng on Friday to restrain from taking the law into their own hands following threats to avenge the death of two young boys after a suspected kidnapping incident on Tuesday.
Premier Job Mokgoro’s spokesperson, Vuyisile Ngesi, tells OFM News that the premier, during his visit in that area, managed to calm and quell any violent incidents by residents who were up in arms accusing foreign Nigerian nationals of the crime. The two 10-year-old boys were found dead on Thursday night in a swimming pool at a residence in Imperial Reserve, Mahikeng. He says contrary to earlier reports that the two boys were kidnapped, the police have somehow not been able to corroborate their earlier version of the kidnapping. It is, however, suspected that they may have drowned.
OFM News previously reported that the police said according to the information the boys were lured with a pack of potato chips before they were pulled inside the vehicle before three occupants drove off. After the meeting between the premier and the police, Ngesi said the kidnapping version remains highly questionable at this stage.
Mokgoro has expressed shock and sadness following news on the death of two young boys. “I am deeply saddened by the turn of events, and urge members of the community to allow the police to investigate this case without communities taking the law into their hands,” Mokgoro said. “I also call upon all sectors of society to intensify the advocacy for the protection of children’s rights, this as we are this month commemorating Human Rights month.”
“We are with you during this trying period,” Mokgoro concluded when sending his message of condolence to the families of the deceased boys, their friends, learners and teachers at Podile Primary School.
