A 55-year-old suspect will appear at the Welkom Magistrate’s Court today on charges related to drug dealing.

This is according to the spokesperson of the Hawks, Hangwani Mulaudzi, who told OFM News that this comes after the man was arrested last week Thursday after the South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB), the provincial Hawks and the Welkom police’s K9 Unit followed up on information that the man was due to make a drug delivery in Virginia on the day of his arrest. The police spotted the man’s vehicle, however, he would not stop to be arrested, which led to a high speed police chase through the streets of Virginia.

In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspect deliberately crashed into the vehicle the police used to chase him before driving off. He was arrested shortly therafter. During the pursuit he threw away a large number of suspected mandrax into a nearby storm water drain. He also swallowed some of the drugs and members were forced to contact the emergency services to take him to hospital. Police members, however, managed to retrieve a few of the tablets he had thrown away next to the storm water drain. They also found a further consignment of tablets as well as a white powder inside his vehicle. The Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) is probing both substances which were found and the suspect will face charges of attempted murder, dealing in drugs and reckless driving.

The man is one of three suspects that were arrested by the Hawks in the province for drug-related crimes, who will today be appearing at the said court. This follows after the provincial Hawks also arrested two suspects on Friday, aged 43 and 25, for allegedly dealing in drugs. “The two were arrested after the team obtained search and seizure warrants targeting two houses in Bronville, Welkom. In the search of the first house, the members managed to seize an assortment of drugs which included, amongst others, mandrax tablets and dagga worth over R70 000. In the second house, members only managed to retrieve CAT and dagga worth about R45 000. Further charges cannot be ruled out,” Mulaudzi said.
