FS DA says arrests of municipal officials is not enough─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:08 Wed, 13 Mar 2019
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State has blasted the troubled Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality after two of its senior officials were arrested for fraud and tender irregularities on Thursday.
The party leader, Patricia Kopane, says while the party notes the arrest of two senior executives, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Nrateng Khumalo, and the Expenditure Manager, Diakanyo Khampepe, this is simply not enough.
Earlier on Tuesday, the African National Congress (ANC) said it welcomes the arrests of the two officials. The party’s provincial spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, says they are working on measures to curb corruption and deal with those implicated in acts of corruption and thus welcomes the arrest of two senior officials at the municipality. Kopane, however, says this municipality is patently incorrigible under the ANC-led government and it comes as no surprise that it has reportedly lost nearly R4.6 million as a result of alleged irregular, wasteful and fruitless expenditure.
Kopane further says this is the same municipality that owes Eskom almost R3 billion. She says the arrest of officials is just a smokescreen because the very politicians who masterminded the corruption scandals have not been held accountable. The two appeared on Friday where they were both granted R10 000 and R1 000 bail respectively.
