Five people from the University of the Free State have embarked on a 350 kilometre walk, from the University’s Bloemfontein campus to the QwaQwa campus, in an effort to raise R2 million.

According to a statement, issued earlier this week by the university, this initiative dubbed “The Walk to Uhuru” is aimed at raising funds and advocating for the rights of the less privileged. The walk, which is an initiative between the university’s Student Affairs department and its office for International Affairs, started on Sunday and will continue until Friday when those participating in the walk will arrive at the QwaQwa campus. The UFS SRC President, Sonwabile Dwaba, said, while his body is complaining, he’s pleased to be a part of a team working towards the advancement of student education especially in light of the fact that it will be raising funds for those intending to study next year.

"Speaking on behalf of #StudentsMustGraduate, we are seeking to raise R2 million and we have started the first leg by walking to QwaQwa. We've already done under 200 kilometres now and we're asking residents of South Africa and listeners of OFM News to please donate money to this cause. All you have to do is go to https://www.givengain.com/cc/ufs-walk-to-uhuru/ and donate whatever amount. There is no limit on the money you can donate towards this initiative. And to the rest of the country, we thank you for your support on the roads. The responses have been overwhelming and thank you so much for the love you've shown," Dwaba said.

This journey will prepare the team for their mission to Uhuru (peak of Mt Kilimanjaro), from 20 June to 20 July 2019, where they will trek to the peak of mount Kilimanjaro in an effort to raise funds for students who would otherwise be financially disadvantaged.
