30-year-old Godfrey Moletsane, from Marquard, was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Refilwe Masakala, over a year ago after he suspected she was having an affair.

This is according to the spokesperson of the police in the Free State, Sam Makhele, who said that Moletsane was sentenced to 23 years imprisonment for the murder of Masakala. He was also found guilty for the attempted murder of her 55-year-old mother, Puseletso Masakala. Moletsane killed Masakala on the 3rd of January last year and, following the murder he escaped, but was found near Virginia on the N1 road  where he was arrested.

Makhele said, on that fateful day, Moletsane arrived at the home of the deceased at around 04:00 am and took a knife and stabbed her 20 times while she was asleep. She died on the scene. He  then went on to stab the deceased’s mother, who was also in the house, in her upper body as well as in her thighs. The mother was admitted to a nearby hospital. Moletsane fled the scene, but he was traced and apprehended on the N1 road near Virginia.
