Unrest continues in FS town following all night protests─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 08:14 Fri, 22 Mar 2019
Unrest has flared up in the Free State town of Marquard, which falls under Setsoto Local Municipality, over service delivery.
Police spokesperson, Phumelelo Dhlamini, tells OFM News disgruntled residents have been protesting since Thursday night, March 21, not only barricading roads in the small town, but also throwing rocks at passing motorists. Dhlamini warns motorists to steer clear of heading in the direction of the town as the situation is still tense. “Motorists rather drive to Rosendal till they reach Ficksburg and then join the R 26 from there”, cautions Dhlamini. The Setsoto Municipality, which includes the towns of Senekal and Clocolan, have long been marred by financial constraints with Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, sending an intervention team to look into the service delivery challenges there in 2018.
OFM News reported previously that the municipality was grappling with burst water pipes in Senekal, in addition to stolen electricity cables in Ficksburg, which resulted in water and electricity supply issues in December 2017.
