NW Municipality to account for lack of water supply─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 09:38 Wed, 27 Mar 2019
The North West’s troubled Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality is required to submit a report accounting for the lack of water supply and water tankers to the office of the premier and national Cogta before the end of the week.
This was ordered by Minister Zweli Mkhize following his visit to the area on Monday,25 March. Mkhize was told of at least 50 000 people who are affected by water problems, of which 27 000 are in Huhudi and others are in extensions 25 and 28 of the Naledi Local Municipality. He has ordered the municipality to ensure sustainable water supply to communities while his department works on long-term projects to address the issues faced by the area. The provincial Cogta department is set to spend R3.2 million on four boreholes and upgrades of pump stations that are expected to provide water to the affected communities within the next three weeks.
He further stated that the blocked pipe in Huhudi must be attended to as a matter of priority and it must be cleared within a period of four weeks.
Mkhize has urged all officials in the district to work closely together to ensure that all the plans materialise within the given time frame.
The Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality is amongst the four North West municipalities that are currently under investigation for investing over R300 million in the now-liquidated VBS Bank. It was found to have invested R150 million, of which R100 million was from the Regional Infrastructure Grant (RIG), R25 million from the Equitable Share-Free Basic Services and R25 million was from the Building Fund.
