Police shoot at protesting residents─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:00 Thu, 28 Mar 2019
Police opened fire at irate residents of Boipatong near Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng during a protest as they clashed near the offices of ArcelorMittal, where members of Numsa are on strike.
This as the community marched to the Emfuleni Local Municipal building to demand answers as they have allegedly been without electricity for three weeks. Residents joined the union's protest outside ArcelorMittal, to demand that the company insource contract workers. In a video in OFM News' possession, residents can be seen running from police as they fire rubber bullets at the crowd. The shooting by the police have since been criticised by two unions describing the incident as despicable, with Numsa further saying it is obvious that ArcelorMittal is using labour brokers and it has found a convenient loophole in the law to abuse workers. Despite numerous attempts, the municipality could not be reached for comment.
