Maluti-A-Phofung municipality officials set to appear in court | News Article

The state of service delivery, lack of governance, alleged maladministration and corruption in the Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality in the Free State will come under scrutiny this week when two senior officials appear in court.

OFM News' Katleho Morapela reports the officials, Chief Financial Officer, Nrateng Khumalo, and the Expenditure Manager, Diakanyo Khampepe, were arrested by the Hawks last month for fraud and corruption amounting to more than R4 million.

The duo have since been granted R10 000 and R1000 bail respectively. Mulaudzi confirmed that five suspects, who amongst them were four senior official from the municipality and Zero Tolerance’s company director were last year December arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation and that all the suspects involved in the case are set to appear before the Bethlehem Regional Court on April the 4th.

The ANC in the Free State has since welcome the Hawks’ intervention at the troubled Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality. The party’s spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, told OFM News they are working on measures to curb corruption and deal with those implicated in any acts of corruption and thus welcome the arrest of the two senior officials.

The Maluti A Phofung currently tops Eskom’s list of municipalities that owe it money for bulk power supply. It owes the power utility more than R2.8 billion, and is listed in the latest Auditor-General report amongst the municipalities that need urgent intervention.
