FS head of disaster speaks on rescue efforts in cyclone hit countries | News Article

Head of the Disaster Management Center in the Free State, Marcus Butler, is urging South Africans to keep assisting cyclone hit nations whichever way they could.

This, as he reiterates that the countries of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi are going to take several years to recover from the trail of distraction that has hit them. Butler was involved in search and rescue efforts in Mozambique last month and recalls how the storm affected more than 1.8 million people, killed at least 468 people and left thousands of people in need of food, water, and shelters.

He alludes that they joined hands in bringing about the much needed humanitarian relief, and in assisting short staffed local clinics among others, but more still needs to be done.

Tropical cyclone Idai has been called the worst storm disaster to hit the continent, with the death toll continuing to climb. The storm has reportedly killed 259 in Zimbabwe and 56 people in Malawi.

It made international headlines throughout the month of March, as it caused flooding, excessive wind-speed and storm surge damage in the central region of Mozambique.

The adjacent countries of Malawi and Zimbabwe also experienced severe rainfall, flooding and damage from the high wind speed.

Rescue operations continues while NGO’s and governments continue to help survivors, in the three countries with shelter, food and other necessities.
