Madikizela-Mandela's Brandfort house: Residents frustrated with delays─── LUCKY NKUYANE 12:00 Wed, 03 Apr 2019
The residents of Brandfort in the Free State have raised their frustrations with the delay in the planned refurbishment of the late struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's house.
Residents say the delay in turning the house into a museum, despite millions of rands having been budgeted for this, is shameful and disrespectful to her legacy.
This as on Tuesday she was honoured at the Fourways Memorial Park Cemetery in Gauteng since it has been a year since her passing on April 2, 2018, at the age of 81.
One of the young people in the area, who asked to remain anonymous, tells OFM News that the youth in the area had high hopes that the project will put the area on the map and inspire generations to come.
He says over the years they have listened and heard endless promises from the government that the house was to be turned into something memorable to honour the late struggle hero's legacy but to-date, nothing has happened.
Meanwhile, a 66-year-old elderly woman also spoke to OFM News. She says she has such fond memories about the influence Madikizela-Mandela had on this community.
The elderly woman says she remembers how the police officials, back in the olden days of apartheid, used to chase them around and make them run for their lives.
The woman, however, says the inability of the government to fulfil its promises of turning this house into a museum is one that should be spit upon.
"It's a disgrace that after all these years nothing is coming forth and all we hear is empty promises," she adds.
"We are aware that huge monies were paid for this project but today we see nothing," she concludes.

A young man OFM spoke to says he is shocked, as is the rest of the community, that nothing was held in honour of Madikizela-Mandela at the house on Tuesday since it was the anniversary of the date of her death.
"It's upsetting and shocking that even on Tuesday no event was held in this house or in this area to honour the late mother of the nation," he concluded.
