SAHRC expected to release report on #VaalRiverPollution | News Article

A report about Vaal River pollution by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is soon expected to be made public.

The commission’s spokesperson, Buang Jones, has already started with drafting its report following the sitting on an enquiry in 2018 after summoning several alleged roleplayers.

He says all the suspected river polluters have made their written submissions to the commission during the inquiry last year. The Emfuleni Local Municipality, that includes Vanderbijlpark, has been fingered as one of those who immensely contributed to the extensive pollution of the river.

This after allegations that over 60 megalitres of raw sewage were spilling into the Vaal, amongst others. Jones says the report will indicate as to who is responsible for the extensive contamination of the Vaal.

OFM News previously reported that the Sebokeng water treatment plant in Emfuleni is on Thursday expected to be in the spotlight during a visit by the SAHRC. This as the commission is continuing with its relentless probes over allegations that the municipality and other stakeholders played a role in the extensive Vaal River contamination.

Jones, said that its probe in the matter does not seek to prematurely convict or put the blame at the doorstep of the municipality. He said raw sewage has been flowing into the river from pump stations on the northern bank of the river in Emfuleni‚ posing environmental and health risks to communities in areas such as Vereeniging‚ Sebokeng‚ Boipatong, and Sharpeville.
