FS IEC set to announce objections, confirm state of readiness─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:31 Mon, 08 Apr 2019
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Free State is expected to paint a clear picture of its state of readiness ahead of the much anticipated general elections in exactly a month.
This, as the electorate will on Tuesday hold a media briefing in Bloemfontein. The electorate’s Provincial Manager, Itumeleng Liba, previously told OFM News that they don’t foresee any major hiccups in the upcoming elections, except for bad weather conditions and load-shedding. He is, however, tomorrow expected to outline plans in case the province experience extreme weather conditions and load-shedding on May the 8th. With exactly 30 days to go, the IEC is also expected to give a detailed response to questions and suspicions over the objection of some political parties’ candidates and how that will affect parties set to contest the elections.
Many have thus far accused the ANC of tampering with its candidate list and making provision for members implicated in state capture. A number of opposition parties and members of the public have raised questions over the inclusion of controversial politicians such as the likes of Bathabile Dlamini, Malusi Gigaba, former Free State Agriculture MEC and Mineral Resources Minister, Mosebenzi Zwane, as well as the embattled former North West ANC chairperson, Supra Mahumapelo.
Mahumapelo has thus far pronounced that the IEC must disclose the names of those who are objecting to his deployment to Parliament. He said he had written to the IEC requesting information about the complaint against him.
Following objections that have been raised regarding several candidates affecting nine political parties, questions are mounting as to whether certain political parties would still partake in the elections and whether 28 political parties will still be contesting elections in the Free State.
Meanwhile, the electorate’s spokesperson, Kate Bapela, told OFM News that the commission will clarify its position in all of these during a planned media briefing on Tuesday.
