Protests flare up in Kroonstad─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 10:56 Thu, 11 Apr 2019
The Moqhaka Local Municipality in the Free State is urging community members who allege there are tender irregularities and mismanagement of funds by the municipality to approach law enforcement agencies.
This, after members of the public in Maokeng, Kroonstad, embarked on protests this morning. The group is reportedly up and arms over service delivery issues, alleging they are on the receiving end of a municipality that fails to prioritise its residents.
Coupled with this, some social media users have taken to Twitter and Facebook alleging the municipality does not appoint locals in key projects and that they still grapple to access basic services such as water. Municipal spokesperson, Dika Kheswa, told OFM News that they are unsure why Kroonstad residents are protesting as the municipality has been providing services such as water, electricity, refuse removal and road infrastructure maintenance in all its areas. He adds that those with allegations of maladministration and corruption should rather come forward with proof and lay charges.
Meanwhile, OFM News’ Jabulani Radebe reports that the situation in the area is tense with high police visibility. He says angry residents have thus far allegedly set alight two municipal vehicles as well as one guard room.
All entrances to and from Maokeng are closed with burning tyres and stones.
Premier Sisi Ntombela is expected to address the aggrieved residents soon.
