Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says it is suspected that the young mother, Tebello Mqumbu, is staying in Hennenman or Thabong with her boyfriend after allegedly running away from the police.

He says Mqumbu left her two-year-old with another ten-year-old child in 2018 under the false pretence that she was going to town (Odendaalsrus). Thakeng says later, after there were no signs of the mother returning, the child was taken to the shelter in Matjhabeng, that include Welkom, but was later handed over to the grandmother in Thabong, Welkom. A case of child neglect was registered.

Thakeng has urged anyone who might know her whereabouts is to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Nomthandazo Mtengwane, of the Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit [FCS] at 057-391-6186 during office hours.
