NW premier to speed up investigations of maladministration at Traditional Councils | News Article

The Special Investigative Unit’s (SIU) investigation into the allegations of maladministration at the Traditional Councils of the Bakwena-Ba-Mogopa and Bapo-Ba-Mogale in the North West is expected to be stepped up.

Premier Job Mokgoro says following deliberations with both parties recently, a few resolutions have been taken and the SIU investigation is one of them. This decision was taken after allegations of maladministration and mismanagement of tribal funds by a tribal leader, Kgosi Motheo Mamogale.

On Monday, the Premier met with Bapo-Ba-Mogale in Bapong outside Brits to find a way forward after all parties agreed that the allegations of maladministration rendered the council to be dysfunctional. Mokgoro says they will facilitate the outstanding issues and disagreements that have since rendered the traditional council ineffective.

In 2018, Mokgoro intervened between the Baphalane Traditional Council and the local residents who accused the council of maladministration.

The standoff between the two led to the total shutdown of schools and clinics for at least four months. Following his intervention, Mokgoro appointed investigators with clear terms of references relating to issues raised around the administration and good governance. Two schools - Kwenatlase High School and Baphalane Primary School - were torched last weekend.
