Traffic authorities prepare for high volumes─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 09:55 Thu, 18 Apr 2019
Traffic authorities in the Free State are ready for high traffic volumes on all the major routes in the province, as people travel to various destinations ahead of the long Easter weekend.
The Department of Police, Roads and Transport spokesperson, Hillary Mophethe, says traffic volumes on the N1 at the Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza have already started increasing.
She says they have noted about 250 vehicles passing at this toll-gate just between 06:00 and 07:00 this morning.
Mophethe alludes that traffic volumes are expected to rise in the next two hours. The department urges motorists to be patient on the roads and to abide by all traffic laws.
Meanwhile, the national Department of Transport has appalled to all road users across the country to be cautious on the road and reduce speed.
OFM News previously reported that the Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety, and Liaison, has sent a stern warning against traffic law offences and any acts of criminality ahead of this Easter weekend.
Launching the provincial Easter Road Safety Campaign along the notorious R31 route earlier this week, MEC Lebogang Motlhaping urged all road users to be cautious on the roads and to obey the rules of the roads.
Motlhaping told OFM News there will be an increased police and traffic visibility this weekend and warned that transgressors will not be left scot-free.
He said their joint operation with members of the SAPS throughout the province has already yielded results and saw approximately ten motorists who were not in possession of drivers’ licences being stopped on their provincial routes in a period of less than two hours.
Motlhaping assures the public that safety and security in the province and in the country at large are of utmost importance and warned motorists to refrain from transgressing against any traffic laws.
