FS police urge motorists to avoid the Marquard route─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:26 Fri, 19 Apr 2019
The police in the Free State are urging motorists to avoid passing through the town of Marquard following reports of unrest that broke out earlier this week.
OFM News yesterday reported that the unrest intensified with angry protesters pelting passing vehicles with stones. One of those vehicles belonged to a Johannesburg-based man who was making his way to Ladybrand for a meeting when he heard initial reports of protest action via radio between Marquard and Senekal.
He then decided to travel from Winburg instead to avoid the unrest. As he approached the town, he was met by frustrated and angry residents who began hurling stones in his direction, eventually hitting his back window, as he attempted to flee the chaos.
Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, this morning told OFM News that the situation is calm and no incidents have been reported except for a vehicle that was thrown with stones yesterday.
She, however, maintains that the police are still appealing to motorists to make use of alternative routes.
