The Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport is urging motorists to be cautious on the roads and reduce speed.

This, as the South African Weather Service has sent a warning of cloudy, cooler and rainy weather conditions for the entire Easter weekend.

The Department’s spokesperson, Hillary Mophethe, says there has not been any major accidents in the province thus far, but a number of motorists have been caught speeding.

She says two Provincial Inspectors arrested a Medical Doctor driving a BMW at 226km/h on a 120km/h zone at the N3 Toll Route, yesterday.

She says the doctor was not granted bail and will soon appear in court. Four motorists were also arrested on Thursday for speeding and were released on bail ranging from R2 000 to R4 000.

Mophethe warns motorists to obey the rules of the road.

She, in a statement, adds that they expect traffic volumes to increase on Monday when travellers return from different holiday destinations.

The provincial department says it will release a report on Easter traffic on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, preliminary statistics reported to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) by provincial authorities indicate that 549 motorists have been arrested so far, with 312 of them caught for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The second highest speed recorded was on the N14 in Gauteng where a motorist was detained for travelling at 196 km an hour.
