A number of roads in Central South Africa have been closed off due to localised flooding in the wake of rain during the Easter break.

In the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, which faced localised floods earlier in 2019, motorists and residents are being warned to avoid Nelson Mandela Drive, Dr Belcher Road, the Batho Intersection next to the Police Station, Fort Street Subway, and the OR Tambo and Hartley (Coca Cola Intersection).

Mangaung spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, urges households to make pathways to allow water to flow out of their yards. Other parts of the Free State, specifically the R30 just out of Welkom towards Theunissen, specifically the southbound lane is partly waterlogged. Motorists are being cautioned to travel safely. Localised flooding was also reported in the North West city of Klerksdorp, on the New Matlosana Mall Road between the N12 and Doringkruin on Sunday. Chairperson of the Road Incident Management System in the Kenneth Kaunda District, Vusi Mohlakore, tells OFM News the road is now safe to travel on.

A forecaster at the South Africa Weather Services’ Bloemfontein office, Tonie Rossouw, says they have issued a warning for localised flooding in the Free State. “There are some places that have already received between 40 and 50 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours and expect to receive more over the next two days,” reveals the forecaster.
