DA protests at Madikizela-Mandela's house in Brandfort─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:58 Wed, 24 Apr 2019
Residents of Brandfort in Majwemasweu in the Free State have brazed the chilly weather and are coming out in their numbers despite the Democratic Alliance's (DA) protests outside the late struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's house.
Several residents, young and old, eagerly appear to be awaiting the Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa's arrival at the venue where he is expected to further divulge on his visit and plans to renovate the house.
Scores of DA supporters are seen in their traditional regalia, picketing outside the house.
Despite the protests by the DA, the workers from the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) in their orange overalls were seen cleaning the yard. This as Mthethwa is set to officially announce the contract on Wednesday regarding who is set to lead the controversial renovation of Madikizela-Mandela's house.
Mthethwa will also provide updates on the restoration and development of the house with the project plan, including the restoration of the dwelling house and bombed clinic, and converting them to interpretative spaces; as well as the construction of a multi-purpose centre with Wi-Fi facilities as well as a parking area.
The visit forms part of the Government’s commitment to restore the historically significant 'House Number 802' in Brandfort where the late liberation struggle heroine was banished to by the apartheid government.
