Frankfort residents march because of dirty water, other issues | News Article

A group of residents in Frankfort has accused the Mafube Local Municipality in the Free State of infringing on their basic human rights. They allege that the municipality has been supplying them with dirty water for several months now.

OFM News earlier reported on a statement which was issued by the Public Order Police in the province, which warned motorists of protest marches in two towns, one of them being Frankfort. One resident in the town, Zamokuhle Mofokeng, who also took part in the march, said substandard water was but one of the issues the residents presented in their memorandum to the municipality today.

“The reason why we embarked on this march is that, in our town, we’re forced to drink dirty water. In Ward 7, which is Phahameng township, right up to I think Sunrise township, the water that we have is very dirty. It even stinks of mud,” Mofokeng said.

He further said that through a civil rights group known as the Agents of Change, the residents tried to write letters to the municipality for answers but all their efforts fell on deaf ears. Mofokeng further wanted to specify that the protests and those participating in them are not related to politics or electioneering, as critics of the civil rights group have suggested in the past with previous marches. “The fact that this march is coming like a week or so before the elections are purely coincidental,” Mofokeng said.

OFM News contacted the Mafube Local Municipality’s spokesperson, Zandie Tshabalala, who said she was unaware of both the march as well as the issues raised by residents in the town and referred us to another contact within the municipality, who then requested for time to gather the information and draft the responses.
