FS Mangaung transport system marred by doubt─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:37 Fri, 26 Apr 2019
The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system by the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM), that includes Bloemfontein, has been labelled as a money making scheme and branded further as an unnecessary project that is set to fail.
An EFF member in the area, Thabo Lekhu, says the much-anticipated BRT system will never succeed with the inadequate road infrastructure, amongst others, that the municipality battles with.
He alleges the lump sum of R2.6 million that is being budgeted for by municipality for the announcement event, will only be looted by the elite under the false pretence of rendering basic services to the people.
The municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, however, brushed off the allegations by Lekhu, saying the municipality understands that people are angry but the mayor promised to engage with them regarding the project.
Lekhu says they will not be fooled by the event but stresses that they are out in numbers to monitor the announcement.
He adds that roads in Mangaung are too narrow to accommodate the buses. He says similar projects in other provinces, such as Tshwane in Gauteng and Rustenburg in North West have failed. Mlamleli in February 2019 launched a second fleet after a purchase. This follows the initial launch of a fleet in May 2018.
