The number of minors, arrested for the suspected looting of foreign-owned shops and the destruction of property at Jouberton, Klerksdorp, on Monday, has risen from three to five.

This is according to North West police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh.

She says the arrests of the two minors follows after the violent protests in that area escalated on Tuesday. Eighteen suspects, including 15 adults and three teens, aged 16 to 17, were then apprehended by the police.

On Friday, three of the five minors made their second appearance in court after they were released in the custody of their guardians on Wednesday by the Children’s Court.

Myburgh says their next appearance will be on 3 May 2019 to face a charge of public violence after the court on Friday postponed the case.

The names of the suspects are: Dumisane Charles Jankie (21), Tebogo Lebeko (37), Mpho Leema (24), Thapelo Lerefolo (22), Zandile Mafilika(20), Thabiso Brende Majola(26), Ofentse Onesimas Mere (19), Katlego Mmusi (20), Vuyo Christopher Mogorosi (25), Moahludi Stu Molontoa (21), Kgosi Isaac Montwedi (25), Xolani Gladwin Ntozini (32), Bonakelo Gibson Sengwayo (31), Tshepang Augusti Tsholofelo (18), and Tshepi Wessely (24).

The looting and destruction of property have since received much condemnation on Facebook from residents who were venting their frustrations with the looting incident that took place in extension 10 on Monday afternoon. They labelled the incident as senseless and unnecessary.

On Tuesday reports also stated that foreign nationals have been taken to a place of safety.
