Bloem Show management says all safety and occupational health certificates were issued and safety checks performed on a fun fair ride where three people were injured on Saturday morning, 27 April 2019.

This is according to CEO Elmarie Prinsloo, who explained to OFM News that a new safety clip of the ride's freely-spinning car came undone and it overturned with its three occupants.

The injured, two adults and a teenager, immediately received medical treatment and were transported to the MediClinic Bloemfontein.

“We are grateful that there were only minor injuries. They will be discharged tomorrow.”

Prinsloo further assured the Bloem Show community that they are committed to the safety and well-being of all visitors, exhibitors and participants.

"All other amusement park activities will carry on and the show continues until Saturday 4 May 2019.”

Upon OFM News' visit to the fun fair operated by Carnival Funfairs later in the day, the ride in question was closed and barred with danger tape. It seemed, however, business as usual with visitors milling around and enjoying the rides.

Visitors seemed not to pay much attention to the closed ride.

The incident is currently under investigation.

According to Wikipedia, the Tilt-A-Whirl consists of seven freely-spinning cars that hold three or four riders each, which are attached at fixed pivot points on a rotating platform.

As the platform rotates, parts of the platform are raised and lowered, with the resulting centrifugal  and gravitational forces on the cars causing them to spin in different directions and at variable speeds. The weight of passengers in these cars (as well as the weight distribution) may intensify or dampen the spinning motion of the cars, adding to the unpredictable nature of the motion.
