MMM to engage with irate locals over transport system─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:23 Sun, 28 Apr 2019
The Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM), which includes Bloemfontein, is set to meet with disgruntled Ward 5 residents, who were furious and threatened to disrupt an event where the Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN) project was named Hauweng.
Scores of residents, mainly youth, descended on the event in Phahameng and threatened to disrupt proceedings saying they are being excluded from the project.
Ward 5 Councillor and the municipal council speaker, Mxolisi Siyonzana, was later embroiled in a heated argument with the group that seemed relentless in their efforts to disrupt the event.
Siyonzana then later during the proceedings of the event said the municipality has agreed to meet with the disgruntled group on Thursday to discuss and solve the impasse.
Metro spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, also told OFM News that a commitment has been reached with the group to find a way forward.
MMM executive mayor, Olly Mlamleli, told the gathering that the BRT will create dozens of jobs for residents. Though she did not specify how many jobs will be created, Mlamleli urged residents to rally behind it and make sure that it delivers what was envisioned.
Although there was a palpable sense of excitement, some residents, like EFF member Thabo Lekhu, are sceptical. He believes the project will fail because it is not meant to serve the needs of the people but to serve the needs of what he calls the elite.
Mlamleli, however, said the contractor will have no choice but to hire the locals if this project is to be a success.
The metro has previously maintained it has entered into an agreement with the taxi industry regarding the introduction of the Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN), refuting reports that the taxi industry is opposed to the system.
Khedama said the metro is continuously engaging taxi owners and the industry at large on a monthly basis, adding there is a Joint Technical Committee on the matter, which includes the taxi leadership.
