NW scholar transport expected to be disrupted

NW scholar transport expected to be disrupted | News Article

Those planning to disrupt the day-to-day running operations of buses across the North West through a shutdown have been issued with a stern warning by the provincial department of community safety.

MEC Mpho Motlhabane says his department will not tolerate chaos and anarchy to disrupt scholar transport, following what he says is an irresponsible message from a Facebook account.

In a post, there is a warning that buses will be set alight. This is apparently in relation to the non-payment of monies by the department to these scholar transport services. They say the non-payment has left them in a seriously dire situation and has affected them negatively.

Motlhabane says efforts to address the issues of the delayed payment to the irate service providers are underway.

In March 2019, the Department of Basic Education condemned the interruption of learners’ education due to lack of scholar transport in some areas of Madibeng. Furthermore, the Facebook post accuses the department of favouritism saying it has noted that some companies were prioritised over others. It says payment by the department for their services is not a favour but mandatory.
