Small parties undeterred by ATM withdrawal from court challenge

Small parties undeterred by ATM withdrawal from court challenge | News Article

The close to thirty small parties that plan to challenge the results of South Africa’s sixth general elections in court are undeterred by the withdrawal of the African Transformation Movement (ATM) from their bid.

The representative of the collective, Romeo Ramuada from the African Content Movement (ACM), says they are still taking the Electoral Commission to the Electoral court to demand that an independent auditor be appointed to look into multiple voting allegations, despite SADC and African Union observers declaring the country’s 2019 elections free and fair.

The parties are not satisfied with Statistics South Africa’s appointment as the independent auditor. The ATM, on the other hand, has reportedly said the IEC has acted in good faith and professionally answered its demands. Ramuada has agreed to speak to OFM News on their next plan of action later today.

The parties’ long list of grievances also includes the indelible ink that voters reported was easily removable, voting districts that did not have scanners, also known as zip-zap machines, people in provinces being given varying allotment of voting ballots, for example in the North West where its alleged people were given three ballot papers. The IEC has acknowledged receiving the complaints in the form of legal documents. The disgruntled group is also not happy with the media coverage they allege they did not receive.

Some of the parties are Forum 4 Service Delivery, Black First Land First (BLF), Congress of the People (Cope), the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC), and the United Democratic Movement (UDM). Newcomer to the political scene, the Good Party led by Patricia De Lille, who finalised her bitter divorce from the DA, is not amongst the list of disgruntled small parties. Good has won 3% of the vote in the Western Cape and has also received enough national votes for at least one seat in Parliament, a performance welcomed by the De Lille.
