Viljoenskroon protestors set to appear in court | News Article

The 24 people arrested in Viljoenskroon following protests that flared up during Special Votes last week are expected to appear in court on Friday.

The group arrested for public violence is allegedly involved in the torching of a community hall that was set to be a voting station and a local clinic.

The unrest that broke out just a day before election day was allegedly due to a lack of service delivery in the area. The case against the group, which consists of both men and women, was postponed last week for further investigations.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, has confirmed that the situation has returned to normalcy following the arrests.

He told OFM News that the police had to keep a close eye on this town as well as towns such as Marquard and Kroonstad, where there have been sporadic protests, to enable elections to run smoothly.
