The Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport has sent its condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased and injured in a bus crash at Alma road in Welkom this morning.


The departmental spokesperson, Hillary Mophete, tells OFM News that the department also hopes the 45 patients that were sent to private and government hospitals in the Matjhabeng area recover speedily. This, as the death toll increased from 7 to 9 after the body of the InterCape busy driver was allegedly found hanging from a tree 300 meters from the accident scene, and a child who died at Medi Clinic. 


Mophete says according to information at their disposal the driver was lost and took an unfamiliar route. He supposedly found himself going in the wrong direction, and the bus capsized at a circle. Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Montantsi Makhele, told OFM News that the investigation into the incident was underway, adding it was premature to conclude that the driver was travelling in the wrong lane at the time of the accident.

The driver is alleged to have lost control of the bus that led to the deadly crash. The Free State Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Sipho Towa, told OFM News that 4 women, 3 kids died on the scene, 1 Male the (driver) allegedly hanged himself. Mophete says it is sad that the driver had to take his life following the accident.
