Intercape dispatch senior officials to assist in Welkom bus crash | News Article

The InterCape bus company says it's dispatched its senior officials to assist in the investigation of a deadly bus crash that occurred on Alma road in Welkom, claiming the lives of 9 people and leaving several others injured this morning around 4:00.

The company’s media communication officer, Pieter Louw, tells OFM News that following the accident the company has since established a crisis centre to help and assist with the matter.

He says the bus was en route between Durban and Upington via Bloemfontein.  Louw says at the time of the accident there were 53 passengers on board and two drivers - one of whom has since hanged himself 300 meters away from the scene.

He adds that the company is shocked and saddened by the accident, adding the management will cooperate fully with the investigation. Meanwhile, Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

“The coach is in a roadworthy condition and a full Certificate of Fitness test was done on the coach 2 weeks prior to the accident”. “The driver was trained and appointed as a professional driver. The driver was familiar with the specific route,” Louw adds.

He further says a 24-hour crises center is open to attend to all the inquiries pertaining the accident - the crisis centre can be reached for passenger information at + 27 21 380 4434, or for media queries, email media@intercape.co.za.

“Our deepest and most sincere condolences to the families of the deceased passengers and the Intercape regrets the accident,” Louw concluded.
