ANC retain a ward in troubled JB Marks Municipality | News Article

The ANC has retained Ward 12 in the JB Marks Municipality in North West following the by-elections that took place on Wednesday.

Timoti Eddie Phakisa, an independent candidate; Gontse Molotsi from the ANC and John Pule Moelane from the EFF contested the elections. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 municipal elections was 60.77% and the ANC candidate won the ward with over 82 % of valid votes.

Molotsi is now the new councillor of the ward. Meanwhile, the ANC in the region has expressed its confidence in her, and said she will bring about the much needed change and deliver services to residents.

This municipality is amongst the seven North West municipalities that have recently made news after they were placed under administration.

This brought the total number of municipalities under administration in the province to 15.

It was established after the amalgamation of Tlokwe and Venterdorp municipalities.

The provincial government said financial distress, instability and collapse of service delivery were amongst some of the pressing issues as to why they placed the municipalities under administration.

The other six municipalities placed under administration include Mamusa in Schweizer-Reneke; Lekwa Teemane in Bloemhof and Christiana; Ratlou in Setlagole; Tswaing in Delareyville; Madibeng in Brits and the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District in Vryburg.
