The ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, says numerous patients were found lying on the road and several were found inside the various vehicles following the accident at around 13h10.

He says at least four trucks and four light motor vehicles were scattered all along the road and paramedics from various services managed to treat the patients and provided the critically injured with advanced life support interventions. The incident follows two deadly accidents in Central South Africa which claimed at least 11 people’s lives, including 6 kids, 4 women, and 1 male. An Intercape bus driver allegedly hanged himself following the accident.

Meiring says once treated several other patients were then transported by various services to nearby hospitals.

Two learners from Thuto-ke-matla Secondary School were buried at the Doornlaagte Village near Groot Marico and Zeerust in the North West this weekend, following a bus accident caused by a scholar transport bus driver’s alleged negligence.

According to the provincial education department, Omphile and Sedimoga Moreri died on 14 May 2019 after a bus rolled back and fell into an embankment on the N4 between Doornlaagte and Mogopa, en route to Groot Marico, which resulted in the loss of the two learners’ lives.

It is alleged that the bus driver left the bus on a hill with its engine running after he had stopped to chase after a passenger who had jumped off without paying him R20 as per their earlier agreement.

Meanwhile, the Road Accident Fund (RAF) earlier said it will assist family members of those affected by the horrific bus crash in Welkom in the Free State. The deadly accident that happened on Monday 20 May 2019 claimed the lives of 9 people and left at least 45 injured. It is alleged that the bus driver lost control of the bus that was travelling on Alma Road in Welkom causing it to overturn.
