Ramaphosa set to deliver #SONA2019 in June─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:50 Thu, 30 May 2019
The first State of the Nation Address (SONA) for the 6th democratic Parliament will take place on 20 June.
This, after the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thandi Modisa, and Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Amos Masondo, have received a letter from President Cyril Ramphosa indicating when he will deliver his much-anticipated speech.
The SONA, set to take place in less than a month, will be the second one to be held this year.
Following the ANC’s victory in the May 8 general elections and Ramaphosa’s cabinet announcement last night, expectations are high that he will put more emphasis on measures to deal with, namely corruption, stabilise state-owned enterprises, draw investors and create job opportunities.
Parliament’s spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, says Ramaphosa has in a letter indicated that the joint sitting of both houses of Parliament, to enable him to deliver his State of the Nation Address, will take place on 20 June 2019 at 19h00.
“The Presiding Officers will consider the letter of the President, which will be processed by the appropriate structures of Parliament and published in the official publications of Parliament. At an appropriate time, the Presiding Officers of Parliament will apprise the public of the details of the SONA ceremony, which is the second this year, and the necessary preparations being put in place in line with the institution’s constitutional functions”.
