SA gears up for 2019 National Child Protection Week | News Article

The South African Government and NGOs across the country are gearing up to launch the 2019 National Child Protection Week this upcoming Sunday.

This, after the Department of Social Development indicated that this year’s Child Protection Week will be commemorated from June 2 to June 9 due to the transition in government for the 6th administration. The week, aimed at raising awareness about children’s rights as stipulated in the Bill of Rights and the Children’s Act of 2005, often sees all sectors of society mobilise together to give priority to children and address issues that many are faced with. But with reports of abuse on the rise, many social media users are taking to Twitter and Facebook to state that child protection should be an ongoing, year-long campaign. Many are further raising questions over how the new administration plans to deal with challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and other socio-economic issues that affect the upbringing of children.

The official launch set to take place at the Chris Hani Sports Complex in Johannesburg, Gauteng, is expected to be led by the former Minister of Small Business Development who is now the new Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu.
