Newly appointed MEC of the Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Thembeni Ngcangisa, is appealing to communities across the province to work with the police and provide information on crimes committed.

His plea comes after he earlier paid a visit to the family of murdered DA councillor, Monica Deniacos, and her husband, Basil, who were killed at their home in Dealesville last week.

OFM News earlier reported that the two suspects that were arrested over the weekend for the crime, who were set to appear at the local court, won’t be appearing at the court for murder charges but on charges related to their illegal immigrant status. Ngcangisa said he went to the home with a delegation from the Free State Provincial Government, which included William Bulwane, who is the recently appointed MEC of Agriculture in the province. Speaking to OFM News shortly after his visit earlier this afternoon, Ngcangisa said he conveyed his condolences to the family and the opposition party.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson in the Free State, Motantsi Makhele, confirmed to OFM News that the matter has been taken over by the Hawks in the province. Questions have been sent to the provincial Hawks spokesperson, Lynda Steyn, on the matter. At the time this article was published, she did not respond yet. Her response will, however, be included in the follow-up article to this matter.

OFM News reported that the Free State-based couple’s bloodied bodies were discovered by their helper when she arrived for work on Friday morning, May 31. Makhele, told OFM News previously that a blunt object has been identified as the murder weapon. Makhele says Monica, who was 68 years old, was found lying in the passage while her 74-year-old husband’s body was found beside the bed. A gun and a Toyota bakkie, belonging to the couple, have been reported missing. The incident is believed to have occurred on Thursday, the day before their bodies were found.
