Moqhaka's runaway mayor granted R100k bail─── PULANE CHOANE 07:53 Thu, 06 Jun 2019
The Moqhaka Local Municipality in Kroonstad's Simon Mqwathi was granted R100 000 bail by the Local Magistrate's Court.
This follows after Mqwathi appeared at the court on charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice for his alleged role in a dodgy security tender that was awarded to the municipality. The spokesperson for the Hawks, Lloyd Ramovha, said that Mqwathi was granted bail on strict conditions.
The accused was granted bail with the following conditions :
1, To attend court until the case is finalised
2, No contact and interference with state witnesses
3, Not to commit any other crimes whilst on bail
4, To hand over all his passports to the investigating officer
5. Not contact all the employees of Moqhaka Local Municipality, directly or indirectly
6, That the investigation officer and team leader must inform the Acting Municipal Manager and the Executive Mayor about all the conditions. especially about the condition that the accused must not have any contact, directly or indirectly, with the employees
Mqwathi was arrested last week after he was meant to hand himself over at the Hawks the previous week, following which he then went on the run. He is one of five suspects that have been arrested with regards to a tender that was awarded to a company known as Zero Tolerance, which the Hawks believe was fraudulently awarded this tender at two municipalities in the province. The four other accused will appear next week at their respective courts and were all each previously granted R10 000 bail.
