The current working conditions of the manufacturing sectors in Botshabelo and Bloemfontein will come under scrutiny in a two-day blitz inspection by the Free State Labour Department, beginning on Thursday.
The Labour Department says it discovered gross infringements of worker’s rights in some areas during Worker’s Month walkabouts in May, notably in Botshabelo where the first day of inspections will take place. Altogether 24 workplaces are the targets of these blitz inspections.
The Department in the province says it will take reactive measures as soon as possible. A debriefing session on the inspections will be held at the Labour Department headquarters in Bloemfontein on Friday afternoon.
The OFM News team was at the Botshabelo, Jacobsdal and Heilbron legs of the Worker’s Month Roadshows, where in Botshabelo over 300 people sought assistance from the department regarding a wide range of issues. The provincial department’s Nandipha Kahla said of this number in the Mangaung area six people had enquiries and claims from the department's inspectorate services unit, 56 had claims from the unemployment fund, while 11 people claimed from the compensation fund.
