Malema back in Bloemfontein court─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 06:51 Fri, 21 Jun 2019
EFF leader, Julius Malema, is this morning expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court.
He is facing charges of violating the Apartheid Riotous Assemblies Act after he urged people to occupy vacant land.
The matter was postponed last year pending the outcome of a case in the North Gauteng High Court, where Malema is challenging the constitutionality of the Apartheid Riotous Assemblies Act on grounds that it is constitutionally invalid.
It is alleged that on December 16, 2014, during the party’s elective conference, Malema incited party members to commit a crime, by occupying any vacant land they came across.
It is reported that civil rights group AfriForum that year laid charges against Malema for the land invasion speech at the University of the Free State.
EFF deputy president, Floyd Shivambu, has in reaction to the charges called the move an "apartheid-era tactic".
He said the state did exactly what the apartheid regime used to do by charging him for a political speech.
Court proceedings are expected to resume at 09:00.
