Criminal activities in Matjhabeng in spotlight | News Article

Issues regarding illegal mining in the Matjhabeng region in the Free State will today come under the spotlight.

This, as the Provincial MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini, and Provincial Police Commissioner, Moeketsi Sempe, are expected to brief the media on police efforts to address the increasing number of criminal activities and the number of Zama Zama’s operating in the Welkom area.

The city has in the past months made headlines over various criminal activities, including murder.

CCTV footage that emerged online, depicting a gruesome murder of a 54-year-old man who was shot at close range while sitting in his car in the parking lot of the Commando Shopping Centre, sent shock waves across the country, with social media users posing questions over safety and security in this city. The footage showed two men approaching a blue VW Polo before firing their firearms five times. Investigations pertaining to this case still continues. Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, in a statement says police in the province have been hard at work to fight illicit mining and associated crimes such as illegal possession of firearms, drugs, illegal processing of precious metals, robberies, and murders which have been reported in the Goldfields recently.

He says several arrests and recoveries have been recorded pertaining to various cases following intensified police operations in the area.

Further details including the police's plan of action regarding escalating criminal activities in the area are expected to follow after the briefing.
