Government officials in North West will be held accountable should they transgress and misuse taxpayers’ money.

This is according to the newly appointed chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), Job Dliso, who has just been appointed on Tuesday 25 June 2019.

He says his committee will not hesitate to act against officials or anyone who downplays the importance of service delivery through corruption and maladministration. He adds that he is busy going through a legacy report from the previous administration which includes, amongst many others, the issue of the controversial VBS Mutual Bank in which municipalities in the province illegally invested millions of taxpayers’ money. Dliso says he is looking forward to the release of the audit reports of the Auditor General (AG), Kimi Makwetu, on Wednesday with the VBS saga set to be at the top of the agenda.

He says following the report by the AG, his committee will then meet with the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) to look into every single municipality in the province to make sure that the money is spent accordingly.

He says President Cyril Ramaphosa was clear in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) - all the officials and public representatives must be accountable for whatever wrong deeds are done and this is the message they will be carrying out across the province.

Dliso says the officials must ensure that proper and quality services are being delivered to the residents. OFM News previously reported that the Moretele, Madibeng and Mahikeng Local Municipalities, as well as Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, which invested with the bank, appeared before the Provincial Public Accounts Committee (Scopa) to account.

The North West Provincial Legislature appointed chairpersons of portfolio and standing committees in a meeting chaired by the Secretary to the Legislature, Oageng Mosiane. Other chairpersons of the different Portfolio Committees appointed today, includes Aron Motswana, who will be heading the Premier, Finance, Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement, and Traditional Affairs Committee.

Priscilla Williams will be heading the Portfolio Committee on Social Development and Health and the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and Transport Management, and Kim Medupe will be heading Public Works and Roads.
