Ikageng protesters out on R300 bail─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 07:11 Sat, 29 Jun 2019
The Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court in the North West has granted bail to the nine suspects who were arrested for public violence in Ikageng on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, says the suspects who were arrested in extension 11 at the height of the unrest are out on R300 bail each and are set to reappear on 16 July. The tenth suspect, who was apprehended a day prior in connection with the excavation hijack, where tarred roads in the township were severely damaged, will only appear in court on Monday, contrary to what police had indicated earlier. Premier Job Mokgoro has since condemned the violent unrest in his State of the Province Address.
“We have made an effort to uncover the sources of this instability and we will in due course take the public into confidence, as the way forward in dealing with these sinister forces,” says Mokgoro.
The Ikageng township descended into chaos in the early hours of Wednesday, when about 300 of the township’s residents barricaded the N12 between Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp with rocks, burning tyres and other objects, bringing traffic on the road to a complete halt. The angry residents who say the JB Marks Municipality is failing to render services, are alleged to have looted a truck and pelted passing vehicles with rocks in the process.
