Opposition parties in the North West have poured cold water on the State of the Province address by Premier Job Mokgoro.

The DA and EFF say although Mokgoro sounded like he has plans, he did, however, not offer many solutions to the current issues facing the province - which include unstable municipalities, crime and a high rate of unemployment.

The DA’s Winston Rabotapi says Mokgoro also failed to give clarity on the issue of 105 schools that are still using pit toilets in the province.

Meanwhile, the EFF’s Shakes Botswe says despite 44 cases implicating officials in the province, no action has been taken against them. Instead they are being rewarded with positions in the provincial legislature.

Botswe says Mokgoro’s government has no clear plans on how to tackle the scourge of high unemployment in the province.

In his Sopa on Friday Mokgoro said as part of the concerted effort to root out corruption, they had previously reported that the Hawks were investigating 46 cases in the Provincial Government and that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was dealing with 44 cases.

“The Hawks had placed ten cases on the court roll for trial while a further 15 were pending further investigations; all involving monies amounting to R2,497 billion,” he said.
