Massive protest planned at NW municipalities | News Article

Disgruntled young people in the Naledi Local Municipality, which includes Vryburg in the North West, are preparing to take to the streets on Monday in protest.

In a statement, the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) seeks to highlight and address issues affecting young people. These include unemployment, job creation and corruption as well as water and sanitation, and environmental issues.

OFM News previously reported residents from the municipality in March this year took to the streets demanding that municipal managers from two councils resign or be fired after the municipality was found having illegally invested taxpayer’s money with the VBS Mutual Bank scandal.

The district municipality invested a whopping R150 million, of which R100 million was from the regional infrastructure grant, R25 million from the equitable share-free basic services and R25 million from the building fund.

Among other issues expected to be highlighted by the protests are the establishment of a university or college in the area, crime, safety and security, including the issue of drug abuse and youth in business through local economic development.

The ANCYL in a statement says they plan to hand over a memorandum to the Dr RS Mompati District Municipality as well as to Premiers Office and different MEC's from different Departments, including mayors. At least four municipalities were found to have illegally invested a total of R314 million in taxpayer’s money in the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank.
