Six lives have been lost in separate incidents over the weekend on the North West roads.

On Saturday 29 June 2019 four people died after three vehicles were involved in a serious collision that happened at about 19:00 in the evening on the N12 road near Ikageng in Potchefstroom.

While in a separate incident, two people died and eight others were left injured when two cars collided on the N14 in the direction of Ventersdorp in a separate incident on Saturday.

Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, says according to information from the N12 incident, it is alleged that the driver of a Tata bakkie was crossing the road at the last entrance of Ikageng (Sarafina Road) into the N12 when he collided with a Hyundai vehicle that was travelling from Klerksdorp towards Potchefstroom.

Myburgh says at this stage, the deceased in relation to the N12 accident have not been formally identified and they are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

She says two men and two women died on the scene on the N12 while seven other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Due to the collision, an unconfirmed number of people were flung from the back of the bakkie and landed on the road. Another vehicle, a Kia, allegedly collided with some of the people that were on the road.” Myburgh says as a result of the accident, the road was closed for approximately five hours. In relation to the Ventersdorp accident, ER24 spokesperson, Ineke van Huyssteen, said an off-duty ER24 paramedic came across the scene shortly before 5.30pm where he called for additional assistance.

"Upon further assessment, paramedics found that a person in the one vehicle sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. In the other vehicle, a man was found with critical injuries. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards and was declared dead on the scene. A young girl was found to have sustained serious injuries. She was airlifted to hospital by the ER24 Oneplan Medical helicopter for further medical care," Van Huyssteen said.

The remainder of the patients on the scene sustained minor to moderate injuries. ER24, as well as various other medical services on the scene, transported the patients to hospital for further medical care. The cause of the crash was not yet known, Van Huyssteen further added.
